Speaking, Coaching, Consulting

Although my primary work is speaking (see Speech Topics) for groups about how individuals, teams and organizations can triple results and balance for everyone through effective leadership and modern HR practices, I also work with people and groups as a coach and HR strategy consultant.

Coaching and Consulting Services

Strategy Consulting

Crisp Leadership Strategies provides a wide range of strategic human resources and performance consulting to a broad spectrum of profit and not-for-profit clients, tailoring to their specific needs. Among other projects we often help organizations evaluate their current HR operations and develop stronger approaches. Since Dave speaks regularly about HR strategies and trends, is a member of several major professional organizations in related areas and a key writer and thought leader for an HR think tank organization, Strategic Capability Network, he can advise clearly on the latest, practical, results-oriented thinking in easily implementable terms.

Consulting projects and needs vary so widely it is best to call directly (or email). Dave can be reached quickly at: (Toronto) 647-227-2646 or click here for email.

Executive Coaching Services

Dave tailors coaching to the needs of clients. This typically means one of two approaches: Personal or Corporate. (For members of HAPPEN.ca job search networking organization, click here or see additional note at the end of this page.)

The goal in all cases is for the individual to truly “take charge” of their own results and destiny.

Coaching comes in endless varieties depending on the personal styles of coach and client, but all share common features:

  • Coaching aims to draw out from the client what they truly want and help them get clear on a path they can comfortably and effectively follow, unique to them, which will get them the results they intend. A great coach is first of all a great listener, not an expert who tells people what they should do.
  • Ideally a coach hears things in what clients say that they may not fully be hearing in themselves – what their challenges are, what their hopes and dreams are and what they believe they can or cannot do to achieve them. The coach can help bring those to light, making it easy for the individual to figure out what action they need to take.
  • Coaching is most effective when the individual is actively in the process of striving to do things and seeking the best ways to do them for greatest results.
  • Coaching increases motivation, but doesn’t create it from scratch. If a person doesn’t see the need or genuinely believe they should or can improve, coaching is not the best solution.
  • Confidentiality is absolute because no one except coach and client is involved in any aspect of the process.
  • The opportunity to talk openly with a person who has no stake in the client’s actions is the greatest benefit. People sometimes cannot hear themselves effectively until they hear themselves telling someone else – but who? If you talk openly to a boss, a spouse, a family member, each has a stake in what you ultimately decide to do. People will worry if you ruminate about changing jobs, giving up something they also depend on and taking a new path… or even if you mention something and then don’t do it.
  • An outside coach has no stake or concern for any outcome other than what suits you most and resolves your own unique wishes.

Personal Coaching
Personal coaching approaches are designed with each individual directly to help them clarify what they want or feel they need to achieve in one or more areas of their lives and take the steps to succeed. Coaching is most economically offered “virtually” via telephone, video-call or even email at times depending on client preference. A feature of Dave’s coaching is “just in time” availability, which typically means the client can bring up questions on short notice if needed. Most coaching proceeds via weekly sessions of 30 minutes to one hour. This is the most flexible option. The client pays directly and is totally in charge of how long, how often and how many topics coaching should cover, with the proviso that the coach can apply discretion to end the sessions. Because coaching is typically “virtual” clients need not be limited to the Toronto area.

Corporate Coaching
Organizations today recognize tremendous value in providing coaches for selected executives or those with unique potential to help them become as effective as they (and the organization) would wish. There are often more formally scheduled meetings on a somewhat less frequent basis over a longer time period (minimum 6 to 12 month arrangements are common) with some face-to-face/on-site because there is generally a work-related aspect to the coaching and the coach may be asked to collect feedback from the workplace or to coach others as well.

In these cases, the organization generally pays the coach, but the individual is the coaching client and the contents of coaching and the conversations that occur between coach and client remain entirely confidential. The organization and the client agree and advise the coach on what the coach may report – typically the coach simply reports periodically or if asked by the organization that coaching is or isn’t proceeding. It will cease if the client or coach break off coaching prior to the agreed end date for the process. The coach will typically only break off coaching if it becomes clear that the client is not likely to or is intending not to make any effort at progressing in any area. In corporate coaching there tend to be more variations and challenges in scheduling and coaching is most often face-to-face. Dave does corporate throughout the Toronto area generally.

Free Consultation
Typically some preliminary discussion is needed prior to entering into a coaching arrangement. Personality fit should be comfortable and should feel productive; various options for timing need to be worked out and specific topics or needs discussed. This can normally be accomplished in a short session.

In some cases a sample coaching session may be warranted. Because situations and individuals vary considerably there is no straight forward way of explaining alternatives other than through direct discussion.

Dave can be reached by telephone at 647-227-2646 or by email (click here for email). Dave can also be reached using Skype, but is normally not on line unless by prior arrangement by email.

Dave offers a special arrangement for job coaching to members of HAPPEN via their site:
